Front and side views of Kothi Darshan Vilas, part Front and side views of Kothi Darshan Vilas, part of the heritage filled Qaiserbagh zone located at the heart of #Lucknow. This structure was completed in 1837, in the last phase of Lucknow's Nawabi period. And this is the state of affairs now...
Part of the stuff I picked up from the Delhi Book Part of the stuff I picked up from the Delhi Book Fair which concluded today! I haven’t missed a book fair in Delhi during the two decades I have been here.

A few days ago, a friend asked me why I go to book fairs when the same titles could be bought online, possibly at a lower cost. Sure, I may get a lower price on books I know of and specifically target on sites like Amazon.

But those who live by the algorithm will never understand the experience of a book fair. I go to a book fair for the joy of being able to browse through shelf after shelf of books, sift through piles to stumble upon something interesting and to suddenly arrive upon titles that I never even knew the existence of.

At book fairs, for example, I might find a book on a historical theme by an utterly obscure author, the kind who would never been seen at a lit fest, but whose research and sources would be outstanding. In simple terms, the pleasure of a book fair is like that of a book shop, magnified several times over.

May the book fairs last, may they grow larger. And I hope one day to be able to walk through the iconic one at Kolkata, though the thought of all that extra baggage on the return journey does baulk me!

Was able to examine these temples and more in the vicinity thanks to a wonderful booklet created by @lokesh_ohri ji. The booklet, which is primarily on Jageshwar, gives a visitor an outline view of this entire heritage zone and its popular culture.
Am always amazed how India's true historians are o Am always amazed how India's true historians are obscure, far from the chattering classes and lit fests. Was privileged to meet and spend some time with one such figure recently, Dr. Yashodhar Mathpal whose work on rock art is extraordinary. A Padma Shri, he is also a fine painter. His work, in the fields of heritage and art, can be viewed at the Lok Sanskriti Sangrahalaya he has set up in #Bhimtal, #Uttarakhand. At 85, he is as passionate about his work as ever. More power to people like Dr. Mathpal. Hope to take the learnings from the session with him into some research.

Looks like it is sticking out of a mound, possibly made up of the debris of a destroyed shrine.

A pity such structures are being lost. Far more elegant than the finest modern Indian houses.

Agree with her for once. Cant have people dying in a stampede in the biggest railway station of the national capital and the ‘Teflon-coated’ minister gets away with getting a committee to check into it.

It would take several volumes to document the less-known heritage of Jaipur/Amer, I try to make a start in the latest for @firstpost
